Preliminary Geophysical Surveys for UXO Risk Assessment

Preliminary geophysical surveys for UXO risk assessment can be conducted during the design phase because they are noninvasive activities that do not require excavation.

During the design phase, the main objectives include:

Avoiding Magnetic and Electromagnetic Anomalies

modify the project, if necessary, to avoid areas with high magnetic or electromagnetic anomalies (using magnetometers, georadar, or EM).

Estimating the Costs of Systematic Bomb Clearance

estimate the approximate extent and cost of Systematic Bellic Reclamation operations based on the safety coordinator's assessments

Identifying risk areas for assessment

identify potentially magnetically or electromagnetically saturated areas, which will require careful evaluation by the safety coordinator to plan Systematic Bellic Reclamation activities.

for UXO Risk Assessment

Probes used in geophysical surveys

Geophysical surveys employ magnetometers equipped with fluxgate-type probes, which measure the vertical gradient of the Earth's magnetic field. The probes are arranged at 50-cm intervals and record at a frequency of 10 Hz. This type of survey, integrated with data analysis software, can detect magnetic anomalies down to a depth of about 3 m, providing an accurate estimate of the remediation activities needed.

Electromagnetic detectors for geophysical surveys

Regarding electromagnetic detectors (georadar and EM61), they are used to detect surface ferromagnetic features (such as gratings, gates, rails, etc.) and have a variable depth of detection: from 1-1.5 m for georadar (antenna frequency 200-400 MHz) to 2-3 m for EM61.

All of our surveys are geolocated in real time with an accuracy of less than 10 cm, and the data can be easily overlaid on project plans, regardless of the coordinate system used.
